Homecare providers encourage their senior clients to practice the following lifestyle habits to improve their heart health and potentially save their life.


Adhere to a Heart Healthy Diet

It can be tempting for seniors to reach for foods that are full of saturated fat, sodium, and sugar. While these foods are tasty, they can hurt their heart and health. That’s why, homecare aides promote heart-healthy diets that are full of fruits and veggies, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean proteins. A heart-healthy diet can help seniors manage their weight and control their blood pressure levels so that their heart stays in its optimal shape.


Exercise Regularly

The key to a stronger heart is regular exercise. Older adults who are inactive should make an effort to engage in at least 30-minutes of physical activity each day. Taking a brisk walk around the neighborhood, participating in a group fitness class at a local gym or community center, or performing light stretching exercises at home are all great ways for seniors to strengthen their heart.
